Toyota Recall: Over One Million Hybrid Vehicles Pose Fire Risk

|

Toyota Motor Corp. has announced that it is recalling over a million hybrid vehicles, specifically its Prius, Prius plug-in hybrid and C-HR SUV models, due to a potential fire risk. The company plans to repair the issue with their electrical systems.

Out of the 1.03 million vehicles affected by the recall, 554,000 are located in Japan, while 192,000 are in the United States. Europe and other markets make up the rest. U.S. drivers will be receiving recall notices through the mail this month.

Toyota said the source of the issue was exposed wire harnesses which are connected to the vehicles’ power control units. Over time, they can erode, generate heat and eventually short circuit.

There has only been one reported incident where a car emitted smoke. Luckily, no one involved in the case suffered any injuries.

Vehicles made between 2015 and May 2018 are affected by the recall. Toyota said it would repair the problem with no cost to customers.

Unfortunately, the company has had its fair share of recalls in recent years. In 2016, over 1.7 million Toyota vehicles were recalled due to air-bag and parking-brake issues.
