The Catastrophic Nature of Brain Injuries

Posted By Law Office of James M. Stanley || 8-Mar-2017

The brain is the main hub of your body’s nervous system and is heavily responsible for your ability to think, speak, see, smell, feel, and move. It is also a very sensitive organ, meaning that even the smallest injury or damage to the brain can have very serious consequences. A traumatic brain injury (TBI) can turn your life upside down in the blink of an eye and have repercussions that last for months, years, or even for the rest of your life. It all depends on the cause and severity of your brain injury.

What Is a Traumatic Brain Injury?

Traumatic brain injuries when a person experiences blunt force head trauma – either when something hits them in the head or their head slams into something else – that is serious enough to cause swelling and/or fluid buildup in the area so that pressure is placed on the brain. Concussions, for example, are a less-severe form of brain injury.

Brain injuries become catastrophic when the swelling and pressure is serious enough to cut off blood flow to a portion of the brain. This causes brain cells to die off, resulting in temporary or permanent brain damage. In some cases, the victim can make a full recovery over time, but it can take a very long time. In other cases, the victim may not make a full recovery and is left with permanent damage.

Symptoms of Traumatic Brain Injury:

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness, disorientation, confusion
  • Loss of balance
  • Extreme fatigue or drowsiness
  • Sleeping problems
  • Memory loss
  • Loss of speech
  • Decreased mental capacity

The Catastrophic Nature of TBI

These TBI symptoms usually last for weeks, if not months or even years. In severe cases, a person could suffer from a reduced mental capacity and/or speech capacity so that they require ongoing attention and care from a therapist or care provider. In even more serious cases, victims can slip into a coma. There really is no such thing as a minor brain injury. Anyone who suffers from such a terrible injury deserves to be adequately compensated for their pain, suffering, and loss of life enjoyment.
