Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Posted By Law Office of James M. Stanley || 18-Apr-2019

For most of us, driving is one of the most dangerous things we do on a daily basis and yet we tend to forget how much is at risk every time we get behind the wheel. Even if you drive every day and consider yourself seasoned, you cannot possibly predict the way other people will conduct themselves. Other people’s distracted driving can quickly escalate into an incredibly precarious situation. April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month in an effort to promote road safety, increase awareness about the nature of driving while distracted, and provide a voice for those injured due to the negligence or recklessness of other drivers.

According to the National Safety Council, at least 9 Americans die and 100 are injured every day due to distracted driving. These numbers are shocking and should be more than just a headline--they should enact change in the mind of every person who takes on the serious responsibility of operating a vehicle.

Cell phones completely inhibit our brain’s ability to focus, and many people think if they don’t text and drive then they are employing safe driving practices. This simply isn’t true. Distraction comes down to more than just sending a text. While a red light seems like the perfect opportunity to take care of a harmless task, this could not be further from the truth. Something as simple as checking email on a smartphone is enough to pull the driver’s attention away from their direct surroundings.
